Project Description:
The JHU EWB-USA Ecuador project began in late 2006, when the need for a larger daycare center in the community of Santa Rosa de Ayora, a small indigenous community damaged by the affects of a recent earthquake, arose to provide adequate care for children of working parents. Since the current daycare center does not meet the requirements set by Instituto Nacional del Niño y la Familia (INNFA), a national non-government organization (NGO), it is unable to receive resources and funding required to sufficiently provide care for the children of the community, so it was decided that building a larger community daycare center in Santa Rosa de Ayora would bring numerous benefits to the community not only by providing a safe place for parents to leave their children during the workday, but also by laying a foundation for a better educational infrastructure for the community’s posterity.
Project Stage:
Implementation
Recent Work:
Summer 2011: The Ecuador project is currently working on completing our designs for the entire childcare center. We have been holding weekly Sunday meetings, during which students work closely with our volunteer professional engineers and architects to hammer out details of the building design.
Future works: We hope to be able to submit to TAC for implementation approval in September.

Engineers Help Children in Ecuador

I remember arriving at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) for the first time both excited and overwhelmed by all the opportunities. Of the many things I wanted to do, studying or interning abroad was definitely at the top of my list. I heard about the JHU Chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA (JHU EWB-USA) through a friend and, knowing only that I wanted to do something useful abroad, I tagged along with her to a meeting for their Ecuador project. This was the first semester of freshman year, and I have been with them ever since.
